The Five of You
Hey guys, glad to be back, but I do need to address this wonky schedule I’ve been on…
To make it clear, Nerf This doesn’t have an update schedule, when I first started Nerf This I wanted it to be a MWF update schedule, but after a while I just… started updating every weekday. I never put on my site anywhere that this comic would update daily. I upheld this schedule for nearly two years without many hiccups, unfortunately the past few months have been unforgivably busy, and I’m sorry that it is affecting this comic, I’m truly sorry. It makes me really happy that I can provide something that you can read for free on Nerf This, it really does. As Nerf and my other projects grow, I realize I can’t keep up with it, hell, I’m even looking to hire an assistant. I’m letting Denis from LAWLS and Rush Haven handle my store items so things get out in a timely manner.
By any means, I’m not complaining, I love my life and what I do, if I have to choose what I wanted to be when I was little, the choices were drawing comics, and being a poacher hunter (Pennsylvania doesn’t have a high demand for poachers apparently). Please don’t take Nerf updating infrequently as a sign that I’m, “throwing in the towel”, “giving up”, “not caring” or any of that, I do care, and I’m stressed as hell to find a solid answer to make it work. I should have posted what was going on sooner, and I’m very sorry I haven’t. So, to make this huge summary much more to the point, I want to say, please just hang in there a little bit longer, I promise things will be back to normality very soon. I love drawing comics, and I love drawing comics for you guys. Hell, I’m lucky that people even read my comics.
(sorry about the horrid grammar, I’m writing this after 5am, and I look like I could win some fancy schmancy vagrancy award 😀 Anyways, next comic will be here Monday, and I hope to see you all then 🙂
–EDIT —
If you have any questions about any merch, including the book, please contact Rush Haven, and they will get back to you ASAP.
No worries! Your comics are great. We’re lucky to be able to read such fun entertainment! 🙂
hope you work it out mate but you need the work for money to support your comic so do not be sorry about it 😀
comics*
yer mate chillax comics come second money first then breathing. all goods man keep it together.
I swear to a dapper deity there needs to be a donation jar for you.
Oh, Chase. He’s so adorable when he forgets that the only thing worse than doing it with Mr. Mills’ daughter is knocking her up.
Vintage Chase.
Get Flattr and I’ll push your buttons my friend!
Don’t feel guilty and please never become a poacher hunter.
Dude we appreciate the awesome effort you do! We are better with a comic that comes up once or twice every two weeks but has a high quality standard, than with a crappy comic every day…
Keep up the awesomeness!
Anyone who has ever had a “holy shit how the hell am I ever going to fit all of this into a 24 hour day” kind of week understands how you feel brother. I think that we as readers are lucky that you do let us know how hectic your life has been and why Nerf This has had a bit of a delay. I for one am happy that you grace the webs with your talent and if it takes you a bit longer than usual sometimes to post, then that’s just life. That being said, having a new comic to read has already made this the best day I’ve had during this horrid week. I thank you for that.
No worries, Scott. I’m just glad you haven’t gone on hiatus and then dropped off the face of the Earth like a few others I used to read.
And you should totally be a poacher hunting ninja artist. Or an assassin accountant named Bob. Oh wait, I wasn’t supposed to ever ment-
Don’t worry Scott! I’ve been reading Nerf-this, Scout, and Motokool for almost a year now and there’s NO WAY i’m stopping now ^^ Hope you get everything sorted out!!!
As long as you’re happy, we’re happy!
Don’t worry Scott. You have more people supporting you than mad at you. If people were to watch you’re livestream last night like I did and a few others, they would understandthat you have given up a lot to keep the comic going for so long. People really have nothing to be mad about in my opinion. At least you update often unlike the guy from VG Cats…
wait, you’re from PA?
He makes a good point, The internets told me that sea-water will pickle your pickle.
(@ Scott, Don’t worry about infrequent updates,I’ve always said you need more sleep)
Is there any word on the book yet?
I never understood why people get so mad. You do amazing work and I saw on the stream last night that it is very time consuming(I figured but I never realized how much time it took). You always deliver when you can and the result is incredible! Thank you for all the awesome strips thus far! 🙂
aw don’t worry about it man. the waiting makes getting a new page hella exciting~
If you need to take a break and relax, relax. I would prefer a twice a week comic, rather than seeing you on Nightly News on how you had a mental breakdown and you running through the Penn State campus in the nude.
If you are going use that as a story arc. Can you give me credit for suggesting it?
I just found your comics a couple weeks ago, and I adore them! Take your time drawing them, people will wait and be ecstatic when we can see them 🙂
We get that we get to read online for free – but what about those of us who have PAID to read it by buying books? When will you address this?
He addressed the situation last night during the livestream (I believe he’s addressed it before though). Apparently there are some issues over at the printers.
Well, that doesn’t really help many people since I am sure many do not watch the streams. 😉
You have to understand this is Scott’s first book, so he’s having to learn how to put this thing together properly as he goes. After talking with him last night, as far as I know he’s having the same issues that I came across this week with my book, which I addressed on my strip today if your interested in seeing whats going on.
Since neither of have publishers who are handling this for us like other comic artists have… on top of an already tough post schedule we’re having to spare any other waking moment we have trying to make these books perfect for you guys. Scott though has even more commitments than a normal webcomic artist has so he’s just struggling at the moment. So, please just be patient… and know that the printers are working with us (how ever slow it may be) to make sure the book is perfected before it goes to print. His book is coming. ^_~
Understanding and patience is not an issue (at least not for me). I don’t mind waiting. This is an awesome strip. I love it. I will read if it updates five times a week, or once a month. I am not complaining about waiting to read a free strip on-line. I am merely trying to offer up a constructive critique from the point of view of the fanbase.
That constructive critique is all about the communication. My friend has been trying to get an answer about the book he ordered for over two weeks. He has been ignored. I have also seen many people asking for book updates in the comments section, so I suspect my friend isn’t alone.
Now after hearing from you, I at least know the books are still happening. I can pass the information along. But it is worth noting that the artist himself is not the one who finally gave my friend an answer. It was someone else entirely (you).
A little communication goes a LONG way. At some point, I and everyone else I have seen comment on the matter, was under the impression that this is a Monday – Friday strip. People just like to know what is going on. As I said in another thread, I thought something was actually wrong and did not buy merchandise for that reason. Now that I know what is going on, I feel comfortable spending-my money here. I’m not – and I don’t think anyone else is – “mad” about it. I think Scott is amazing and deeply admire everything about his work. I just wanted to offer my point of view as a fan and reader, and hopefully eventually book owner, of the situation.
I’m sorry that everything has been poorly communicated. Scott has just been very overwhelmed, which often happens with artists who have suddenly become popular enough to have a sizable fanbase that they didn’t expect they were gonna have on top many other responsibility. This is why I’ve taken over all his merchandising for him. If you were to try to contact other well known artists, they the artists themselves likely wouldn’t reply to you either. Trust me, I know, I’ve been there as well. So don’t take that to heart that Scott hasn’t replied. He need to focus on his work; the thing that has attracted you and other to his comics. Which I’m sure you understand.
If you or your friend that you mentioned have any questions about the book or any of his other products you can email Rush Haven and I personally get back to you about what’s going on.
Again, I apologize for all of this and know that Scott does feel bad about all the lack of communications, he’s doing the best he can.
Also, I’ve told Scott to formally address the contact thing on his next post, so anyone else who reads this, please click the contact link in this comment till then if you have further questions.
It’s all Good – I am just glad to know b are still happening.
You are right about the lack of email replies from other artists. Often when I send conversational or praise emails to a creator, replies are rare. However, when the emails pertain to product I have sent my hard earned money for, most creators want me to keep doing that. Usually they or their helpers have been pretty prompt about communication. I don’t always get a personal reply, but at the least they post a general news item or info on the site with their next update or something.
QUOTE CANNON! 😀
Surprised nobody mentioned this yet.
Shouldn’t Taryn’s dad be saying “Who’s,” not “whose?”
Your comics are the funniest and the highest quality of any I’ve come across. It’s more than a little impressive that you managed to keep up with daily updates for long enough that we started taking them for granted.
I’m sure most people will agree with me, Nerf This and co are more than worth the wait, and I personally hope that you get everything sorted as quickly as possible, partly because I’m a nice human being who can empathise with your situation but mainly because I’m a selfish human being and I want to read more of your comic. 🙂
Don’t worry Scott! We will be here waiting for you patiently and anyone that doesn’t want to be patient can go get mauled by a bear! (try updating once a week. It works really well for a lot of the comics I tea and they’re able to put a lot more effort into their comics. People just need to learn to be patient…)
What are you looking for in an assistant?
Take your time and get everything straightened out, Scott. We love you, and will wait in anticipation for each new update until then. <3
Hahaha Chase and Mr. Mills really DO have a lot in common xD. And on the author’s note, it’s really fine that you have things piling up; that’s pretty much how life goes. Just do what you have to do and get your shizznat handled! We can wait ^-^
Don’t worry, Scotticus, you know we still love you. I am getting spiteful at the lack of koalas. It’s just like, where did they go? Why did they give up? Were they really that intimidated by his ear muffs?
Oy, as one anonymous reader who’s never commented anything anywhere, I’d just like to tell you, you’re doing a terrific job man.
Everyone’s got a life and it’s only normal that sometimes you can’t give eeeeverything up for the oh-so-godly purpose of entertaining us.
You’re doing more than enough already, don’t fret about it man.
Thanks for all!
Also is it just me or is Taryn’s dad more manly-looking?
Much as I prefer the quality of material you get from a troubled artist, they don’t seem to last very long. So out of a selfish desire for quantity over quality I guess you should really not worry too much about the update schedule.
Some suggestions for your happiness and wellbeing: 1.) Have a guest artist do something every other or every third week. That’ll give you a bit of time to relax and take your time with the comic. 2.) Encourage bizarre fan-art. And 3.) Don’t wear pants.
Well… I got one of those going for me!!
Hey Scott What area of Pennsylvania, because I live in NE Philly If You need an assistant I might be able to.
Seriously I have experience working with artists
You should probably consider sending him an e-mail about this, a public comment board is hardly the best place for an interview.
Oh thank god, I was worried something had happened to one of my favorite artists! I had checked the site three times a day since Monday, hoping for some news. I was honestly thinking you got hit by a car or something! Glad to see your back, Scott. Don’t work too hard!
I see how it is… you are working towards a vagrancy award! Well, good on ya! I hope you win sir! Nothing quite like the look in the eyes of those non-vagrants when they realize they will never have the epic stubble you have, let alone the epic aroma of BO. On a serious note, glad you are still breathing and making us laugh. keep it up sir!
No worries, although I was starting to go into withdrawal for a time there, I think everyone can empathize with those moments of “Dear god how the hell am I gonna pull this off.
I’m actually having one of those moments right now.
But, my history doctorate awaits.
Several years from now…
It’s times like this where I can’t help but wonder how Chase has survived this long. So long Chase we hardly knew ye.
I wasn’t worried so much about any towel tossing…. I was FAR more concerned that you went into hiding in Guatemala for reasons involving P.E.T.A., peanut brittle and a prosthetic leg… >_>
No worries! I’ll still be here 3-4 times a week, every week in the hope that there’s to be more excellence. =]
I had a feeling a dog, cat and chicken work staff wasn’t going to work out. You need to hire a bear assistant manager to strike fear into them while your out winning hobo awards. Maybe a homeless looking but wise behind his years cobra janitor too.
It’s perfectly fine, good sir, tis not your fault.
Besides, I don’t check the comic every day.
I have an RSS feed for that.
Well, it’s also there to make sure I don’t miss any.
It’s the same with LAWLS, Doctor Voluptua, and Kiwi Blitz.
Still, the new feeling of an update you haven’t see already, the crisp sound of opening a new tab or a new window (thank god for .WAV files), and seeing the comic.
Priceless.
Keep up the good work, Sir Scott!
The General
Don’t worry about things, Scott. You’ve put in some batshit insane amounts of work over the years, and we as your loyal readers have seen you through everything from crazy schedules, illnesses and the wrath of God (i.e. the weather).
For as long as you’re here, we’ll be here with you. You’re a great artist, a great writer (spell checks not withstanding…), and considering how much dedication you’ve given us, a great person too.
However, keeping in touch would be nice, even if you just put a blurb out on Facebook or Twitter or something. Let us know you’re alive, mate.
No worries, Scott. Really, I’m just happy to get to read your work as and when it’s available.
don’t worry about it Scott! Glad to see your dapper self again!
I would not poke the man that kills bears with his bare hands. >.> how is he still alive? O.o
This will probably start another huge line of replies, but why was everyone talking about how it is ridiculous how long he takes, but when he gets a post up and apologizes everyone says “No worries man, we are patient.”
That aside, chase is really pushing his luck here. Mr. Mills already feels emasculated by his wife, and reducing a human being into a protein shake might be just what he needs to feel manly again.
I noticed that too.
“I’m sorry guys!” = “Oh it’s alright, we’re patient, take as much time as you need!”
But-
“” = “Y DO U TAKE SO LONG NED MOAR COMICZ”
It was Only a few people really complaining, they were just very very very very…. a lot of verys vocal about the whole thing. The Majority of Nerfidians (I think this could work as the fan name) seemed to just be incredibly worried about Scott himself.
Eddie is right. It’s only a significant minority that screams out “MAKE ME MORE COMICS, CARTOON SLAVE!!”, like Scott is some type of bio-mechanical printing press with a sense of humour.
We know Scott is only human, or at least a humanoid being running on an otherwise poisonous cocktail of nicotine, caffeine and beef jerky. The poor bloke has run himself ragged, and now is taking its toll. All you can ask for is a quick “I ATE’NT DEAD” post, before he goes back to (hopefully) catching up on that sleep he hasn’t had in the past year or two.
Are you kidding Scotticus?! I’ve learned far too much valuable information from this comic to just say “beh he doesn’t care anymore”. I’ve learned: koalas are evil, comic characters can actually feel when the artistry style is changing, chickens are whores (they sure do love cock), you sanity is absent without leave, the personifications are hilarious and require plushy forms, the internet is for more than just porn, evil dark curse magic makes you dapper, and that condoms can have other uses other than for just sex!
What’s not to love here?
You glorious bastard i dont care how long it takes for you to post as long as you do. Sure i get dissappointed when there isnt a new post, but thats because my mind craves your insanity that i call comedy. You conceive humour that i try and show people and they give me weird looks, which proves to me that you get me! I love you and everything about your humour you crazy vagrant
Would it really not be 7 thats going to the beach counting Zoey’s friend. That would then mean he would think 6 people would not die an agonizing death. Of course if he knew it was Nigel that would be something different, but as far as we know he doesn’t.
Nope! Three “couples” – Zoey & Nergil, Taryn & Chase, Steph & Tony.
At this point Logic is screaming at Penis ‘WHAT DID YOU DO?!’
Bro so long as you post eventually I’m happy. I was growing bored of webcomics until I came across Nerf. Love your work and keep it up. so long as you post I’ll keep reading 🙂
What’s going through Mr. Mills head “I will not kill him, I will not kill him, I will let a shark kill him, I will not kill him, I will not kill him.’
Mr Mills: “Well, that one shark I let swim away that time… Might give it a call.”
I must say, funniest strip ever. Even friends who don’t read this comic regularly found this hilarious.
WE LOVE YOU SCOTT STOP WORRYING 🙂
Also this was brillo.
Scott, anyone who has complained about your busy schedule interfering obviously cares little about what you’re trying to manage at this point in your career.
I recall looking back at your older comics and while they were great comics, your recent work takes web comic to a new level. I would rather see the quality I have come to expect from you more so than sheer quantity of content.
Now that I think about it, the Taryn/Chase engagement provides some excellent story oppurtunities. Chase can finally meet Taryn’s mom. Taryn should meet Chase’s family especially his mom and sister. Might be cool if his dad showed up. If that happened then Mr. Mills would most likely beat him up for one reason or another.
True! For some reason, I had totally forgotten about Chase’s family. That certainly would make for some interesting developments.
If you kill yourself trying to do too much, Sir, there will never be any more updates. And if you start seriously stressing over non-specified deadlines–simply because a small group of people are whiny–it gets less fun for you and begins to effect the quality of the strip (which then becomes less fun for your readers, who adore you). Some of the webcomics I read periodically go well over a month between updates, and it doesn’t bother me terribly; I can always find something else to do, and I understand that real people with real lives are on the other side. I’m just happy that you’re willing to share your comics at all. 🙂
I love all the artwork in today’s strip, and everybody looks awesome. Keep up the good work, Mr. Scotticus!
Methinks we need to have some kind rate up system because your comment is pretty much gold, I honestly do agree though.
Also, I have to share this link to a guest strip from “Manly Guys Doing Manly Things”. It SO makes me think of Chase and his Koala Problem: http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/1013
I love your comics! *sob* Don’t ever write that you think those things ever again Scott. Please keep following your dreams. You are the reason I even started to draw comics with a buddy. You are my hero. And Hero’s NEVER give up!
I love your comics, Scott, and tea sure every post you make. I just look forward to them all. Keep doing what you love, but remember to keep your own needs in mind.
the ocean is a dirty kraken toilet. better make it a million and 1.
Glad you’re not dead, man. But keep in mind what I said; my worry is there because I’ve seen artists spiral downwards. This is a really cutthroat and depressing job you’re in, and you gotta really be a man to make it all work.
Ultimately, I think you should consider my previous suggestion. Black and white comics really don’t take too long to make, and if your fans are truly your fans, they won’t care. I’m here as an investor, and I’ll invest in a damn good story, color or not.
I just wanted to say I stumbled across these comics late last night and finished what i could find of “Nerf This”, “Scout Crossing”, and “MotoKool” in less than twenty-four hours. I am amazed at the plot and character development you pull out of you imagination!
moar mokool
