The Hipster Pick Pocket
Stay tuned later in the week when I make a tutorial page, this isn’t by any means a method for saying I’m “good” at drawing or coloring, in my opinion I’m fairly terrible, and not happy with where I’m at, and trying very much so to get better, BUT, in case anyone wanted to see my process, it will be up Thurs or Fri.
I also added the chapter 3 cover as a print in the store 🙂

That.
That is talent.
That knife reminds me of those little colored plastic swords you sometimes find in your drinks…
While I appreciate the punch panel very much, i have to say that was a very small relatively nonthreatening looking knife
I took it to be “He is very large” and not “The knife is very small” personally.
its not how big the knife is its what you do with it that counts
He picked his pocket? I must say it requires a lot of energy to “pick” a pocket. XD Made me laugh. :3
Err…Pick as in ‘pick through the pocket and take whatever you want’
Its a very common expression…although I’m assuming Ruggles has a cheeky British orphan accent for my own pleasure
I think I was really tired because I know that’s a common expression…what on Earth was I thinking that night…
Ah the havoc a simple weary eye can ensue…
ZING… Ruggles you old dog =)
I think Ruggles is my new favorite. Can we change the name of the comic?
Zomfg!
Is Ruggles single? I’ve been looking for a fictional, short, scarf-sporting hipster to occupy my free time. <3
;D
So Ruggles is a hipster?
Can we please label him something else??????
I think he means he pick pocketed the hipster
He looks more like a metal head, or a grindcore douchebag.
Have you been to a local free-trade coffee joint? He looks like a hipster (Ruggles that is) Also, there isn’t anything wrong with that label.. unless you’ve got something against them, in which case, why are you reading scotts comics?!
(Not saying scott is a hipster, but man can you draw that style with awesomeness)
Yes I have and I know he looks like a hipster, he’s just too awesome to be a hipster.
and yes I have a thing against hipsters, Me being more of the punk rocker head the hipsters always annoyed me and took over my coffee shop…Those bastards.
The reason why I read scott’s comics is because their effing awesome and scout’s personality reminds me alot of myself.
punk rocker head?
Take out the head part.
“I’m gonna to”
typo?
Fixed that type, thanks for the heads up 🙂
Such a large and powerful punch from such a little man!
/swoon
I don’t know if this is where you’re going but its kinda how i see “I, Robot”, “Terminator” and the “Matrix” as part of the same universe.
for some reason, I see it as thus
Scout is first, Ruggles is Taryn’s dad. Nerf this comes next. And finally…. Motokool, where Ruggles again appears as the grandad. and the main character is ……..(drumroll) Taryn and Chase’s kid!!!
but probably, not , but it would be soooooo cool
But then, wouldn’t that mean that Taryn and Chase were dead? (Although I admit to not being as up-to-date on the Motokool history as the other two comics.) That wouldn’t be THAT cool.
Ruggles is pretty awesome though.
(But he’d also have to grow like a whole 24 inches to be those dudes! Lol.)
it might be a teenage version of Mr. Mills possibly
That won’t work because Taryn’s dad isn’t scottish
Wow…he deserved to be knocked out. That is no way to hold a knife! Sure, you gain some accuracy while stabbing, but that hold means that you lose your grip on any attack that isn’t a straight thrust.
Sorry…training coming back to me. Must put on sunglasses and jump through a glass window.
Is there anyway you can show us how to facepunch a guy and pick his pocket along with the art thing?
ruggles has the money in the hand not doing the punching. The guy falling might allow the wallet to slip out easier from the pocket
Now there is a man with his priorities straight!
That was quite awesome. 🙂
also, some incredibly wicked speed/power lines on his arm.
Dear Mr. Scott,
It’s one thing to know there’s room for improvement in your art and yet another thing entirely to be overly critical. “Fairly Terrible” is far from how I would describe your work. I’m always extremely happy to turn to Scout and Motokool and see in every new comic the ways you play around with style and colour. Don’t be so down on yourself. I love your work and really hope you keep it up. And don’t pay too much attention to that little (or sometimes overwhelmingly large) voice that tells you you’re not good enough. Nerf This, Motokool and Scout Crossing are still the three comics I look forward to the most BECAUSE of the vision and creativity that you bring to them.
Also… YOINK!
Yeah. That.
I must say I rather quite agree with Wanderer here. I know from many attempted and failed experiences with trying to produce a comic-strip of any lasting time is difficult, and while it’s motivating to be one’s own worst critic, that just means there’s room for improvement. Don’t let your own criticisms, however, then work against you and stack into discouragement. I adore your art and I adore the content within it even more. The ideas alone are inspirational. And for that thank you. @_n
I….I must build a shrine to this man! and possibly a seperate one for his scarf.
Ruggles is obviously a man of many talents. To quote an obnoxiously used fastfood phrase, “I’m lovin it!” On that note how I would love to see Ruggles beat up Ronald McDonald… It will prolly only happen in my dreams though. Awesome thing to see before I crash for the night!
I would like to once again point out that Large Man had it coming. Beware the beard lest ye be destroyed!
So a fighter/thief, then. Cool.
Also: love the artwork. Your style may be evolving and it may not be where you want it right now, but every step of the way is more facinating than the last. Certainly better than any other web comic out there!
Umm… are you serious? would you like to see my drawings? you will feel like a god of art lol… you are great and I can;t wait to see the tutorial page.
Also Ruggles is awesome.. and teaches valuable lessons.. when someone is mean, you punch and take all his money!
He keeps his money in his face?
I remember reading somewhere that it was advisable that things like punches, kicks, and general full-panel cross-page ‘impact’ moments should go in reading order (IE left to right) so as to let it flow with the writing.
I personally think that’s bollocks, but that’s because I like the idea of a crosspunch like that halting the flow of the work, delivering more ‘impact’ to the impact.
Also I can’t get the mental image of Ruggles basically sliding into that punch with his arm already extended– one of those ‘alright, shut up already’ moments.
Er, typo correction: can’t get RID of the mental image of et cetera.
OMG HEART Ruggles so much, he’s ALMOST as cool as the bird
I agree, Spartacus is the coolest sidekick in the world!
Forget any other life goals I have set up; I want to be Ruggles when I grow up.
😀
Now, did he pick his pocket before punching him, or while he was heading to the ground?
Or did he take a third option, and picked his pocket AT THE SAME TIME AS PUNCHING HIM?!?
I just realized no one in any of these scenes has eyeballs. Or working ones.
They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, so that begs the question, WHAT ARE THEY HIDING?!?
Oh gosh…i read Scout Crossing today…and now i’m addicted
damn you scott! you just keep creating these addicting comics!!
i want my very own Ruggles… Where can I find one… please….
ps. Scott you rule
So epic
Does that dude have a moustache tattooed around his neck?
..really? I know the guy’s supposed to be a jerk, but he’s sat through hours of pain to have the wrong image indelibly tattooed on his back on purpose, and then we’re supposed to support the tattoo artist as he complains about not getting paid? There are limits.
Well, i have successfully caught up with Motokool, Nerf This, and Scout Crossing and I must say that they kick a whole lot of @$$. My hat off to you sir, you are both a gentleman and a scholar.
any chance of a tutorial still in the works? Really looking forward to it!
POTATO PEELER!
is it just me or does ruggles look like chase conners with a beard
wait, i meant mustache. and actually i have decided that he looks more like a mix between chase and taryn’s father
DEFINITLY
Mr. Mills? Is that you???
