Wait, though…I’m confused now. In the other strip (the one that’s linked), both Jasper and Marian’s last names were Spellsworth on the graves, implying that Jasper’s last name was Spellsworth, not Marian’s. I suppose this could be explained by Jasper bucking social trends and taking on his wife’s name, but that doesn’t explain why Nergil says “Funny, I could have sworn Spellsworth was someone else’s name…” before catching sight of Jasper’s grave right next to Marian’s. Unless Marian and Marian both have different last names for some reason, Jasper took on sister!Marian’s last name when they married, and Nergil’s memory is a bit faulty? (i.e. remembering that Spellsworth was “someone else’s” last name but not remembering that it was Marian’s sister’s last name and not Jasper’s? I think I just theorized myself into a coma.)
I discovered you back in July (“The most Dangerous Game” installment), and decided to catch up from the beginning. Since then, I’ve been following faithfully but never commented until now. Your art has evolved dramatically (and wonderfully) in a very short time, and I’ve really enjoyed your strip. You’ve made me laugh out loud many times, smile a lot, and even gasp twice now (once today, and once at Nergil’s big reveal). Sometime soon, I’ll sit down and read your other comics as well. But you do an amazing job, Mr. Scott, and I do hope you keep it up.
Maybe Jasper and SisterMarian already had the same last name by chance? It isn’t overly common, but it does happen (like two people with the last name “Smith” or “Johnson” getting married, for example). “Spellsworth” isn’t common at all in our reality (as opposed to the Nerf This universe), but all it takes is two people with the same last name for it to be possible. As people like to say, “Weirder things have happened!”
But then wouldn’t Nergil’s Marian have the same last name too? Which wouldn’t explain why Nergil freaked out at the last names on the graves if it were true….? I’m just confusing myself here xD
I’ve seen plenty of families here in the US with multiple last names in a single family. Between divorce, preservation (or reclaiming) of mom’s maiden name, hyphenating, re-marrying, children from affairs, legal name changes done for reasons other than marriage, etc., etc. . . . Marian and SisterMarian could easily be half- or full sisters and have different last names.
For all we know in the marriage of female wizards and male humans, one takes up the woman’s surname to express dominance over those whore witches that take up the male’s surname.
Clever.. very clever.
Oh no! Massive misunderstanding! Poor Nergil.
Gotta love drunken wizards!
Ohhhho, I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.

This is exactly what I was thinking.
So glad I wasn’t the first to notice this.
Im callin it here and now, Nergil’s Marian aint dead!
“…and this couldn’t possibly have any ramifications in the future!” – Marian’s father.
Holy crap….. didn’t see this one coming O.o
Just noticed Jasper changed his last name for her!
Oh now that’s rich.
well played…again!
What a twist!
You, sir, are a sly, sly devil. I commend you.

I’ve finally caught up!
devious. hmmm. segway! has st. nicolaus left gifts in anyones boots this year, or were you snatched away with the other bad children?
OH SHAT! -headexplodes-
Hmm, seems to be a little confusion with the last names…
Wasn’t Spellsworth Jasper’s last name, not Marian’s?
Point being it /is/ and Marian’s father drinks HEAVY.
I didnt see this comming….and now it’s here, I see that it totally fits.
I think it would be totally awesome if Nergil’s Marian wasn’t dead, but ended up like he did, as a shadow-creature-thing somehow.
That would be EPIC.
It might also explain snarky’s origin!
Wow I just realized that we haven’t seen Snarky for quite sometime o.o;

is it sad that this isn’t so strange to me? i mean, my uncle named all 5 of his sons ignacio.. so so many nachos.
Remember that George Foreman has 11 children, and all 5 of his sons are named George.
Wait… I thought Spellsworth was Jasper’s last name.
That is one nefarious twist!
well allrighty
