It Was Already Weird
I have been seriously debating changing the name of Nerf This… not sure yet. I always feel weird that if someone ask the name of my comic, I tell them, and they immediately ask if it’s about gaming. This name changenidea is exciting in that “punch a velociraptor in a face and run really fast” kind of way.
First
seconded, heh aheh heh
name change to Madness Incarnate
My pet pigeon and I would like you to keep Nerf This. He also says coo. And then bit my toes. He’s evil. And he wants to know why that bird is shamelessly showing off it’s cloaca.
(I really do have a pet pigeon. I love the dumb bird up on that panel. Poor thing. Be nice to him? 🙂 )
it’s definitely hard to argue that ‘nerf this’ is a fitting name at this point.
change it to “Broken Lines for twisted times” which not only is an ironic name in the fact it says one thing and refers completely to another. but also has poetic value in such that it can be interpereted as a day in the life of insanity and blissful chaos, as well as a subtle hint that there is some sad themes mixed in with the lines of insanity.
of course, this is only my sugestion, and i personally think it fits well, but the end result is completely of your choice 😛
Motokool and Scout Crossing are awesome names. Nerf This… well, let’s see what we can spool out:
Punch a Velociraptor in the Face and Run Really Fast (sounded good at first, but too long)
Pocket Monsters (wait… I think that one’s taken. Damn!)
Super Dicks (cute but doesn’t have that oomph!)
Dapper Orgy (maybe not reaching the right audience)
…aw, man. Naming stuff is haaard.
honestly I never understood why the name was nerf this in the first place. But I’m also usually about 5 minutes to 5 years behind the times, so what do I know….
Didn’t nerf this originate from an early comic where they played with nerf toy guns. Kinda like a ‘tough’ guy act with toy guns. I thought it was oddly poetic and ironic.

A-and I just realized that particular page has a grammatical error! D; Damn the Grammar Nazi in me!
xD Just looked back at the older comics, what a jump in style.
this one here!

It was always called Nerf This from the beginning (god, how the art style, story, characters… everything has changed!). But here is the earliest reference I could find.

I don’t have much of an imagination for a new title, but “Broken Lines for Twisted Times” sounds pretty cool (and more appropriate).
This is the earliest one, it’s the fourth comic.

…aaand it can be abbreviated as “BLTT”, which makes me think of bacon. Mmm… delicious bacon!
I think you should keep Nerf This because it sounds funny and like somebody is saying FU…
But I think Dapperly Awesome is a cool name.
I’ve always just assumed “Nerf This” was some obscure term or insult I’ve just never heard of. One part of me says the name doesn’t really fit, but the other part is screaming, “Keep it! NOSTALGIA!!!!” So I don’t really know what I think of the (possible) name-change.
Honestly I keep forgetting this comic is called Nerf This because the web page’s title says “Adventurously Awkward!” Which isn’t a bad name there.
I think “Adventurously Awkward!” would be a great title, and it describes the comic well.
“This conversation just got really weird.”
I like “Adventurously Awkward” It’s pretty much spot on, isn’t it? And looking at everybody else’s comments, it seems to be a well liked name.
Adding in that I also think “Adventurously Awkward” would be a perfrect name.
I believe that nerf this is a perfect name because it fits as well as almost anything in the comic. If the name fit new readers would get confused
May that old man rest in peace.
-sniffle-
Mr. Furguson! Forget about punching a velociraptor! A gentleman shoots for the stars! Go punch a t-rex!
But you could get away with punching a t-rex. It’d be “Punch A T-Rex And Stand Really Still”
Like Mike, I always think that it’s Adventurously Awkward, not Nerf This. It’s in all your ads and webpage title too. I would just change it to that.
I like “Nerf This” but I can see where it could be seen as something with gaming… How ’bout along the lines of: “Punches Raptors” “Intrepidly Dapper” or “Monstrous By Design”
Dammit, Scott, you make an excellent point… The strip really isn’t the same as it was back then, and a name change would make a good deal of sense… But TV shows don’t change their names even if the title only makes sense for the first season or so and then goes so far off from the original plot that it doesn’t make sense anymore… So I’m leaning mostly toward leave it as Nerf This, and slightly toward changing it to Adventurously Awkward since that’s what’s on all your ads….
Why don’t you just call it Adventurously Awkward? It seems like that’s in the title rather often, and frankly I’ve just starting knowing it as that. It wouldn’t change much if you did start calling it Adventurously Awkward.
I think that IF you do change the title it should be Adventurously Awkward, just like other people are saying.
…I liked the idea of Madness Incarnate.
I vote either keep it as “Nerf this” or like others have said, change it to “adventurously awkward”.
I vote for Dapper Adventures in Finery!
I think the vote’s for Adventurously Awkward, so who am I to argue with the crowd?
wait? creepy dark dude is cursed? wonder what his curse is and how exactly having a fair would cure the curse
Pigeons are hussies.
Set up a poll for your potential names! You are sure to have many.
Man, he really IS good at catching pigeons!
Honestly, I think Adventurously Awkward suits this comic quite well :]
This comic is tagged as Creepy Carnival and I think that sounds like a good name.
I thought it was called ‘Adventurously Awkward’ for months when I kept seeing it on all the ads.
I actually can’t see it as anything other than Nerf This. I remember I first found it because I am a genius and saw it linked on some other comment and was intregued because I had -no clue- what ‘Nerf this’ meant. Don’t ask what I thought it meant.
Unintentionally disturbing. Woo!
Erm… off topic, is it wrong that I kinda love Shadowguy? He’s changed from his first appearances, but he’s still all good. I backed him more when he was an obvious baddy because I’m sick like that and I don’t need to mention that my friends won’t watch films with me because you’re not meant to cheer Pinhead/Darth Vader/Your-villain-of-choice on…apparently. Hmm. Anyway, he’s still awesome. Yes.
Just needed to get the love out there.
Except you know Pinhead is a Quasi-goodguy in some of the films. Like number 2.
Eugh, I know… but I like to live in blissful ignorance of that fact, so shh 😛
So… Since no one has really commented on the fact that its awesome because i have used “punch a velociraptor in a face and run really fast” as an actual unit of measurement on how excited i am about something.
Its always been Nerf This, since Slappy and the big fight. You cant change it now!
Nerf This is original, and honestly I don’t see how that would refer to gaming. Most people I know assume every web comic is about gaming somehow.
In the MMO world, if a skill or class has been made weaker in a patch, they call it being “nerfed.” The name “Nerf This” always makes me think the comic’s about World of Warcraft.
Noooo. If you change the name, then you’ll have to work it into a comic somehow….(check archives)
I like Nerf This, and even though it doesn’t directly relate to a lot of the comic, not all titles have to. Changing titles is always tricky, too, because people are easily confusable. If you do change it, though, choose carefully! >>
I imagine half the reason he does want to change it is because people get confused about it. I did. 😮
Don’t change it! I love the name Nerf This, and whenever i talk to it about my friends they know what i’m referring to. How will i be able to explain a name change??
Plus, you know, it’s original, its catchy, and i regularly use the phrase as a replacement to “suck it!”
I enjoy that
I’d definitely go for Adventurously Awkward. You could call it Double-A for short! :] If you feel like a name change is in place, then go with what you want to do. I think that if it’s causing significant confusion, it’s not worth it to keep.
Also, I would definitely not go with “Broken Lines for Twisted Times” because it sounds really emo and misleading.
Whatever happened to Mr. Wiggles the municorn?
I would go with changing the title but keeping Nerf This as a domain, perhaps with links to your art, an about you page and all of your current comics.
Ala Mitch Clem, only you would actualy update.
I thought it was called “Nerf This” because of how Chase’s original character was. He was doing his own thing, not really caring about the consequences of such things and just having a good time. Then he kinda changed into a friend-impaired in-his-own-little-world kind of nice guy(nice guy?!) who generally did awkward yet amusing things (still in his own little world mind you). I like both style of Chase, and I do like the name of the comic. Also what does it matter if the name of the comic makes no sense to the actual comic? If someone was to say “nerf this” to me I would instantly think of this comic, and I think that’s awesome. Well it would just feel weird to name the comic differently after all this time, since its a good name anyways. But it’s all your decision boss-man, ill read it no matter what you call it lol 🙂 SKEEEE!
Dastardly Dapper
please keep it as nerf-this?
I agree with the people that say you should go with Adventurously Awkward.
It just wouldn’t be the same without Adventurously Awkward (just in my head, because the story and art is fantastic as is)… That and the whole “It’ll snuggle you inside out” is what I’ve always remembered this comic as.
So Shadow Man can talk to animals? Dangit, what curse is he suffering!?
I say keep “Nerf This”, I REALLY like the name as is, and, /some*/ people will be confused, always. But if you do change it, please include the word ‘dapper.’
* often includes me.
The pigeon is giving me a “Gunter from AdventureTime” vibe here.
Oh my!!! Slutty pigeons now too! XD
