We don’t know the details of how he was found yet. For all we know he was wearing a suit and a nametag. Or maybe Monty has psychic powers and has been manipulating everybody around him the entire time (occasionally having Chase abuse him to throw off any suspicion that Monty is really the one in charge).

I pesonally think that Monty got lost and found chase right after his dog Monty died so because of depression he named him monty
BUT… Chase maybe got him when he had a steak in pocket and Monty followed him home… in a suit and name tag

The shadow man is Chase’s evil doppleganger. It explains the dapper finery, Monty’s bond with Chase, and the epic failure he (both chase and the shadow man) is at threatening anybody that’s not a small animal.
